LAS VEGAS, Nev.—Daniel Kirgan, M.D., FACS, chief of surgical oncology at the University of Nevada School of Medicine, was elected to the board of governors of the American College of Surgeons as governor-at-large representing the college’s fellows in Nevada.
Governors act as a liaison between the college’s regents board and fellows, and as a clearinghouse for the regents on general assigned subjects and local issues.
According to the college's Web site, "the American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice."
The college currently has about 77,000 members, including more than 4,000 fellows in other countries, making it the largest organization of surgeons in the world.
John Fildes, M.D., FACS, professor and vice chair of surgery, and Annabel Barber, M.D., FACS, associate professor of surgery, with the University of Nevada School of Medicine, are president and vice president, respectively, for the Nevada chapter of the college.
Kirgan’s term concludes in 2012.
Kirgan practices at the medical school’s Patient Care Center in Las Vegas.
