LAS VEGAS, Nev.—The Clinical Simulation Center officially opened in Las Vegas on Aug. 24. The 31,000 square-foot center is the culmination of a collaborative effort between the University of Nevada School of Medicine, the UNLV School of Nursing and Nevada State College School of Nursing.

The "sim center," as many students, staff and faculty call it, is geared to enhance the learning of medical and nursing students with the latest in medical simulation technology. Students will be able to form critical skills before engaging and working with patients, which in turn will promote and enhance patient safety. The interdisciplinary nature of the center will allow medical and nursing students to work in teams.

The center includes standardized patient rooms which includes infant and adult simulation models, a surgery skills and simulation laboratory, clinical skills laboratory for procedural training, a 12-person hospital ward, five rooms for high-fidelity simulation which include debriefing areas, three classrooms that can accommodate up to 25 students, a lecture hall with a maximum occupancy for 80, faculty and administrative spaces, a lounge, and several study rooms.

The center also houses important basic and clinical sciences research that is conducted by University of Nevada School of Medicine surgeons and physicians.

"The collaborative nature of our center, which includes three schools and two disciplines, is the first of its kind in the U.S.," says Miriam Bar-on, M.D., associate dean for graduate medical education at the School of Medicine.

"Furthermore, our center is the largest west of the Mississippi. Each clinical department at the School of Medicine has been tasked with integrating simulation and/or standardized patients into their curriculum."

The Clinical Simulation Center is located adjacent to University Medical Center.
