Two University Health System physicians recognized as Healthcare Heroes

LAS VEGAS/RENO, Nev.- Two physicians with University Health System, the clinical practice of the University of Nevada School of Medicine were honored by the Nevada Business Journal at its third annual Healthcare Heroes banquets last week. Catherine McCarthy, M.D., and Echezona Ezeanolue, M.D., were recognized in Reno and Las Vegas, respectively, at separate banquets honoring significant contributions to healthcare in the state. Both were nominated by a committee of healthcare experts for their efforts in helping evolve Nevada into a budding, major medical region.
The awards were presented to a total of 20 healthcare professionals statewide. Proceeds from both banquets benefit students pursuing careers in healthcare education at the University of Nevada School of Medicine.
McCarthy, a physician in University Health System's department of family and community medicine in Reno, was recognized with the educator honors. She conducts research on obesity, access to healthcare and osteoporosis and is a volunteer preceptor at the Student Outreach Clinic in Reno. She is a member of the biomedical internal review board, the emergency operations committee and scholarship committee at the School of Medicine.
Ezeanolue was honored for his healthcare innovation. He directs the comprehensive maternal/child HIV program and pediatric research program at University Health System in Las Vegas and serves as the immunization committee chair for the Nevada chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. His major areas of interest are preventable perinatal infections and vaccine preventable diseases. He currently holds various research grants on immunization and immunodeficiency.
