Community Outreach at University Health System
Improving Access to Health Care for Nevada
University Health System and its doctors are dedicated to the well being of our communities throughout Nevada. University Health System doctors and University of Nevada School of Medicine faculty physicians, medical researchers and medical students work together to provide the residents of Nevada access to the most effective treatments available in the state today.
Nevada Organ and Tissue Donor Program
Originally a part of the state attorney general’s office, the organ donor program was entrusted to the University of Nevada School of Medicine in January 2006 to lead the effort to increase the number of organ donations in Nevada. The program works with other health care organizations to increase awareness on organ donation. It produces yearly public service announcement campaigns with the goal of increasing the number of donors in Nevada.

Reach Out and Read
Kids Healthcare is one of the first clinics in Nevada to offer Reach Out and Read, a national, nonprofit child literacy program. Books are given to children during visits to encourage an interest in reading, promote language skills and increase the chance of academic success. Children six months to five years old in low income families are a particular focus.

Yerington Obstetrics Clinics
Each month for the past seven years University Health System physicians in Reno travel to Yerington to provide prenatal care. Residents of the Yerington area receive routine care without having to travel great distances. Clinics are held the second Tuesday of the month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at South Lyon Medical Center. Care includes ultrasounds. Clinics are attended by at least one physician and two resident physicians. Physicians may provide referrals requiring specialized care. Our physicians deliver about 25 babies each year through the program at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. Funding is made by the University of Nevada School of Medicine’s Center for Education Health Services Outreach through a state appropriation for the Rural Obstetrical Access Program.
