About the University of Nevada School of Medicine

Educating and Training Leaders in Medicine

The University of Nevada School of Medicine, founded in 1969, is the only public medical school in Nevada. Established by the state legislature with the mission of educating primary care doctors for rural Nevada, the school includes 16 clinical departments including emergency medicine, family and community medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and surgery, as well as, five basic science departments.

The school has graduated more than 2,000 medical students since its founding. The school also trains resident physicians, with 62 percent of these resident physicians staying in Nevada. This ranks Nevada third in the U.S. in the number of physicians who remain in the state where they complete training.

With campus locations in Elko, Las Vegas and Reno, the University of Nevada School of Medicine provides health care in almost every clinic and hospital in Nevada.
